FAQ
Registered users can search the entire database for free.
The protocol comparator and other premium features are subject to a premium subscription.
It is crucial to develop a self-sustained platform, independent of fluctuating public funding and grants. Premium subscriptions help maintain an expansive, up-to-date protocol database, integrate cutting-edge AI models trained for the specific purpose of finding protocol accurately, and cover essential operational costs like server maintenance.
Primarily designed for Life sciences and chemistry, PubCompare is beneficial for any field requiring detailed experimental protocols. Its robust database and AI capabilities make it adaptable for various scientific disciplines.
PubCompare offers a diverse range of protocols primarily from peer-reviewed publications, preprints, and patents. These include protocols found in scholarly journals, similar to those you’d see in journals like Science or PLOS One, as well as pre-publication versions from preprint repositories like arXiv. We ensure all protocols listed are from trusted and verified sources.
Several publications in Open Access are restricted by Copyrights law and we can not display them. However when we identify relevant protocols within those papers, we will let you know where to find the full text.
PubCompare primarily offers access to protocols from open-access sources. However, thanks to in-protocol citations (also known as shortcut citations) we identify and list relevant papers behind paywall.
Access to Full text will be limited to your organisation’s subscriptions to the journal.
As of now, there is no specified limit on the number of protocols you can search for or compare on PubCompare. The platform is designed to handle extensive searches, accommodating the diverse needs of the scientific community.
However, you shall consider that:
- For Protocol search, we display only the first 10,000 results. You are invited to be more specific using filters or adding keywords to your query for a more exhaustive search.
- For Protocol Comparison results are limited to 20 or 60 most similar protocols as it takes up to 45 seconds per query.
The protocol database on PubCompare is regularly updated to reflect the latest research and publications. This ensures that users have access to the most current and relevant information for their experimental and research needs.
Punctually, PubCompare may integrate new protocol sources and add significant amounts of protocols.
PubCompare ensures the accuracy and reliability of protocols through several measures:
- Sourcing protocols from reputable scientific publications and databases.
- Utilizing advanced NLP algorithms for precise extraction and analysis of protocol data.
- Regularly updating the database with the latest research to maintain current and valid protocol information.

Personal and institutional data is handled in accordance with strict privacy regulations and industry-standard encryption protocols. Users can trust that their information is securely stored and processed, with access strictly limited to authorized personnel only. Additionally, PubCompare is transparent about its data use policies, ensuring users are always informed about how their data is used.
Yes, you can freely share your published protocols on PubCompare. To do so, simply share the manuscript that the journal accepted. To ensure you have the rights to share your manuscript, you can verify this on shareyourpaper.org
Once submitted, our system will automatically extract the Materials and Methods sections and integrate them into PubCompare’s database. Using your paper’s APA citation and DOI, we will locate the full text to gain further insights into your research.
By sharing your protocols, you will automatically receive an Open Science Angel license, granting you access to all premium features on PubCompare.
